Peshawar - U. S. Ambassador to Pakistan Ryan C. Crocker and Northwest Frontier Province Governor Khalil ur-Rehman opened the first "Lincoln Corner" in Pakistan today at Peshawar University’s Central Library. A "Lincoln Corner" is a resource center offering information on aspects of U.S. culture, economy, politics, society and education. Hosted by Peshawar University, the Corner represents a program partnership between the University and the United States of America. Also in attendance were Vice Chancellor of Peshawar University Haroon Rashid, senior staff members of the University, and other dignitaries. The facility joins 325 such centers now established worldwide, with several more planned for other locations in Pakistan in the near future.
Inaugurating the first "Lincoln Corner" in Peshawar, Ambassador Crocker observed that, "Peshawar University is an ideal place for this facility. Over its 45-year history, it has built a well-earned reputation for academic excellence and service to the community and the region, and forged successful educational partnerships with U.S. and other international institutions." He noted that the Corner "will both symbolize and serve the cause of mutual understanding and the deepening partnership between our two peoples."
With a professional staff provided by the University, the "Lincoln Corner" will prove a rich resource for those who need current, accurate information on all aspects of U.S. culture, economy, politics, history and arts. In addition to reference materials, books, magazines, videos, and software, the Corner will have four computers connected to the Internet so that users can quickly access information. The Corner will serve as an information outpost similar to a public library reference service, as well as a place where regular programs, meetings, and other events of mutual interest can be held.
The Corner will be open to the public from Monday to Saturday from 9:00am to 5:00pm, with a Friday Prayer Break from 12 noon to 2:00pm.
